What's a soft starter for?

A soft starter is an electrical device used to control the starting and stopping process of an electric motor, mainly used to reduce current and mechanical shocks during startup, and to protect the stability of the motor and the power grid.

Core Functions

Smooth Start
By gradually increasing the voltage or current, the motor accelerates smoothly from a stationary state to the rated speed, avoiding the impact of high currents (up to 5-8 times the rated current) on the power grid and equipment during direct start-up.

SOFT STOP
Control motor deceleration and shutdown to reduce mechanical impact and water hammer effects on equipment such as water pumps and conveyors.

Protection function
It usually has protection functions such as overload, phase loss, overheating, and undervoltage to enhance system safety.

Working principle

Power electronic control
Soft starters regulate voltage through thyristors (SCR) or thyristor rectifiers. When starting, control the trigger angle to gradually increase the output voltage, so that the motor torque rises smoothly.

Control model 
Voltage ramp start: The voltage increases linearly from the initial value to full voltage.
Current limiting start: Limit the maximum starting current (if set to 3 times the rated current).
Torque control: Directly control the motor torque, suitable for heavy-duty starting scenarios.
